The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
There is something for everyone in Fethiye and the surrounding area: beaches, scenery, historic sites. There are long hot summers and short mild winters. In summer, spend your days lolling in the gorgeous turquoise waters of the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas - swim, snorkel, scuba dive. In spring and autumn, try paragliding, trekking, climbing; investigate Butterfly Valley and the Sea Turtle nesting beaches. In winter, explore historic sites, go horseback riding, mountain biking, and wind down in the evenings sipping your favourite tipple while soaking up spectacular views of the coastal snow-capped mountains which lie to the north of the Bay of Fethiye.
Frommer's Review:
Not much remains of ancient Telmessos, atop which modern-day Fethiye is built. In spite of centuries of destructive earthquakes, the cliff-side Lycian tombs and majestic sarcophagi never fail to draw a gasp.
The city was independent until Alexander the Great's arrival in 334 B.C. Three hundred years later the city came under Roman rule as part of the Lycian union.
The antique theatre in the centre of town dates to Roman times, although its open disposition on the hill indicates Greek influences. The amphitheatre was picked apart for the reconstruction of the city after the devastating earthquake of 1957, and in 1994 restorations and further excavations to the site were begun. To the east of the Municipal Building is a two-story sarcophagus topped with a Gothic-style lid and decorated with war scenes; remains of this type of tomb are scattered about the city and hidden in private gardens.
On the hillside east of town stands the ruined Crusader castle tower, constructed by the Knights of St. John out of the Hellenistic and Roman stonework of an earlier acropolis.
Rock-cut tombs spot the cliff side, the most notable of which is the Tomb of King Amyntas in the form of a Greek temple dating to 350 B.C. The steps of the facade get a bit crowded around sunset, the favoured time for a visit because of the tomb's position on the hill.
Fethiye / Karagozler area
Ölüdeniz:
Although Ölüdeniz is described as a lazy beach destination in some brochures, there is plenty to do if you are not satisfied with long lazy days on the beach and frozen margaritas in your hand.
You can jump from 2000 metres and go paragliding, or go scuba diving in the warm crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. Ölüdeniz area is among one of the best sailing routes in the whole Mediterranean. You can arrange your own group and go on a gulet cruise or alternatively join others and go on a cabin charter gulet cruise along the coast for a week or a day. So whether you are looking for a quiet relaxing holiday, or feeling adventurous and looking for something more than just beach & sun, Ölüdeniz has it all...
Come and discover Ölüdeniz... Come and discover why "Life's a beach!"
Karmylassos / Kayaköy Historic village & Ghost town
Frommer's Review:
This haunting and magical place is the result of the population exchange between Turkey and Greece in 1924 -- in which the Turkish and Greek minorities in each country were repatriated to their "home countries," despite the incalculable suffering such a drastic uprooting caused. The Turkish village of Kayaköy sprouted up in the valley at the base of the abandoned hillside.
Originally the Lycian city of Karmylassos, the village was re-established by Greek settlers as Levissi in either the 11th or 14th century. The houses that blanket the hills date from the 19th century. Today Karmylassos is a ghost town and the remains of the 3,500 identical square stone houses, each positioned to afford the best views of the countryside, take on a haunting pinkish glow at sunset, the best time to visit. Although the churches and chapels have been scavenged in the search for buried sacred treasure, there's still enough of the original structures and ceramic mosaic flooring to make an impression.
At the top of the ghost village, a footpath to Ölüdeniz continues over the hill and through some spectacular scenery. For this hike you'll need a camera, a large bottle of water, and about 2 hours; leave early in the morning to beat the heat and allow an afternoon of recovery on the pearly shores of the Blue Lagoon.
A shorter trail leads to Cold Water Bay, a small cove fed by icy springs, and reachable in under an hour. Be sure not to mistake one trail for the other (one unscrupulous businessman diverted hikers to the latter and his restaurant; he's since been incarcerated for tax fraud) -- a mistake easily avoided by picking up a sketch map of the trails at Bülent's Place, located along the Kaya road. Eager to set people on the right path, Bülent has learned the English word for "map," and will be as helpful as he can be.
The turnoff from the Fethiye/Ölüdeniz road travels through the spoiled enclave of Hisarönü, affectionately called Hiroshima by the locals who remember its age of innocence. If you follow this road for about 5 or 6.5km (3 or 4 miles) through the pine woods, the hollow stone houses will alert you to your arrival. A more inspiring entrance can be made by following the signs up and around Fethiye Castle for Kaya Village/Karmylassos. This winding back way leads through the upper edges of picturesque Kaya Valley, and if you're lucky, you'll get a glimpse of the nomad camp.
